ACLU attacks The Mojave Desert Memorial Cross
I really get sick and tired of what the ACLU has and is trying to do to the honor and memory of this Nations Veterans. The following is from the web site trying to save this memorial. PLEASE, go and sign the petition and help save this and all memorials to our Fallen.
The Mojave Desert Memorial Cross has stood proudly for over 75 years, honoring our American war dead. Or it was until the ACLU stepped in and got a judge to rule the memorial to World War I veterans unconstitutional. They covered the cross with a bag, and when that didn’t work, they boarded it up in a plywood box. Now, they’re threatening to tear down this national monument because they don’t believe America should have religious imagery anywhere on public property.
If they win and succeed in tearing down this monument, what’s next? Imagine what could happen at the Arlington National Cemetery. Will they put bags over all the crosses that mark the graves of our fallen heroes? What about the 20-foot Canadian Cross of Sacrifice?
We believe America should remember and honor her veterans; and were taking our case to the U.S. Supreme Court to tell the ACLU that they can’t tear down our freedom!
The ACLU is threatening to tear down all monuments on public land that contain religious imagery. This fall, The Supreme Court will rule on whether these memorials will continue to stand for our freedoms, or if they will be removed permanently.
It is our patriotic duty to stand up and tell these left-wing organizations that we won’t have our freedoms boarded up or our values torn down. By signing our petition, you will be showing your support for our veterans. Your name will be added to a letter going to the veterans groups of America, thanking them for their service and letting them know you stand with them in the fight to protect our nations war memorials.
You can also consider supporting our fight with a generous gift that will go towards our efforts to defend our freedoms at The Supreme Court. Every dollar you send will make a difference in the way that our American veterans are remembered for generations to come!

If you click on through you see the one war memorial under attack is that giant cross in Mohave. All the other “memorials” are a bunch of different 10 commandment deals. The video makes one think the ACLU and liberals like me wish to tear down real war monuments by picturing the Iwo Jima and WW2 and Vietnam and Korean war memorials. In other words this is just another dishonest attempt to jam the 10 commandments down our throats cloaked under the quise of saving our war memorials. I’m a Vietnam Veteran and treasure our memorials, but frankly this sort of dishonest BS makes me sick. Maybe every veteran doesn’t want to remembered by having a big cross over their names. I’m a Christian but I served with jews, muslims, atheists and everything else. Your story here is a plain lie and should be exposed. I think this story comes under the “bearing false witness” part of the Bible you keep beating waving around. Try telling the truth instead of being a cheap shill for the right wing religious nuts in this country who are just as bad as the right-wing religious nuts in the Middle East. There’s not a nickel’s difference. Both groups think this is some sort of Holy War. We Americans ought to know better than a bunch of brainwashed suicide bombers. Yet crap like this keeps showing up in my mailbox. Either you don’t read about what you post about or you’re just another right wing nut who does nothing to honor our troops. The truth is that there are a lot of liberals over there fighting right now. We serve because we are called not because we alway agree with the wars we are called to. We are still proud to serve the county, but I am not proud to be associated with groups like you have written about here.Sorry you couldn’t cut it in basic training and now have to write this pitiful wrap yourself in the flag waving, Bible thumping crap, but let me tell you, most of these soldiers you claim to love so much fight for everyone, liberals conservatives and all other points of view and mostly they fight for the guys beside them, not for the bible or the flag. Try writing something honest every now and then just to see how it feels. There’s enough hate and suspicion in this country without making up lies to create more.
First off Nick, thank you for your service. I only have one thing to say in response to your comments because we are all entitled to our own opinion. That is one of the great things about living in the United States.
I don’t have a problem with people having a differing opinion then me. If we all believed and felt the same way about everything it would be a very boring world to live in. But I don’t believe a personal attack was warranted. So you sir, have a great day and again, thank you for your service.
So Viet Vet, are you saying that the only “REAL” memorials are those put up by the government? Are you saying that anything else does not deserve to stand? As for the other “real” memorials, it wont be long before they go after them as well. People being attacked and not allowed to fly the American Flag in their own yards, and then the attacks on this kind of stuff makes me SICK! What the hell is this country coming to?! Where is the pride in this Country gone?
There’s a difference between the 10 Commandment displays and war memorials. One promotes religion–the other memorializes the dead. Nobody wants to do away with the Iwo Jima Memorial or the Wall or any off the other memorials whether private or public and I don’t care what people do privately. On your own property, as far as I’m concerned, you call build any damned thing you want to. This whole thing is a bait and switch making us think those memorials we hold dear lke the Iwo Jima, Korean War, the Wall, etc are at danger and that’s not true. All of a sudden every ten commandment plaque in America is equated with these great memorials. That’s an insult to those memorials and the men who are remembered. To use their memory to raise money for and push a political-religious agenda is just plain low. I don’t like it when the ALCU goes too far either, and I don’t really care one way or the other about the giant mohave cross. I wouldn’t want it over my grave, but I perfer a simple soldiers grave. One of the things I fought for and believe in is separation of church and state and so did a whole lot of other people.
We fly the flag in our yard and no one says anything, so I don’t know where that came from, Rick. It that’s happening somewhere, I’d like to know the rest of the story because with you guys there’s always more to the story. As for pride in my country, I find I’m often more proud of the men who defend this country that I am of the ones who run the country and I’ve earned the right and have the freedom to say just what I think.
The only thing that bothers me here is the deception. If someone wasn’t paying attention, they would come away from reading this and believe the Iwo Jima Memorial is in peril–which it is not. That is a very strong image that everyone knows and the end result is that naive followers of the right wing are being chumped for donations to save monuments that are not in danger. Who counts this money. Where does it really go. I see a lot of money being raised in the name of men and women who can no longer speak for themselves. I see actual lies being told about what this money is being raised for, so I have questions and Rick if you think I’m less a patriot, then so be it. I put my time in Vietnam, did my job along with a lot of other so-called liberals. I’m proud of my service, not because I thought that war was right but because I served in spite of the fact I disagreed with the war. I didn’t hide out like so many of the right wing leaders in the country did and I didn’t hide behind a pile of deferments. I volunteered. So I’ve earned the right to speak out when I think the American people are being suckered again. You can pour patriotic perfume all over this story, but it still don’t pass the smell test. In fact, it stinks.
Have you not been watching the news over the last few years? There have been several people across this country that have been told by their Home Owners Association that they can’t fly the American Flag or that it can only be a certain size. I can’t remember all the places that this has happened, but I think I remember one in the Dallas area. Cindy may know, I think she has posted about this before.I wont argue with you about the 10 Commandments….you are right on that one, I don’t see how that could be a memorial to our Vets. But a cross erected as a memorial is legal. The establishment clause does not prevent the display of religious symbols (although in this case the Cross is not a religious symbol; but, a symbol of the veterans’ who died in World War I). The Bill of Rights allows for religious activities as long as the government does not try to establish one religion for this Nation.
C and Rs are the price you pay when you choose to live in an organized housing development. They suck but you don’t have to buy a house there. I have no problem flying the flag anywhere else. The cross is not a religious symbol? Oh really? Where did that come from? Check out Wikipedia: “The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and is used by many religions, such as Christianity.”
Viet Vet, I’m confused by your words. You claim you’re a Christian and yet you refer to the Bible as thumping crap. In my lifetime, I’ve never known a person who considers themself a Christian to refer to the Bible as crap. They may disagree about certain aspects of it, interpret verses differently, debate stories, or worse..not read it), but overall, their fundamental belief is that the Bible is the inspired (God-breathed) word of God and his message to the world (see 2 Timothy, 3:16). In fact, the Bible (thru various examples given) defines what it means to be a Christian and live like a Christain. If you believe that the Bible is crap, what other authority besides the Bible defines Christiany..thus your status as a Christian? BTW…thanks for your service in Vietnam. You’re a hero like so many others who proudly service in our military. God bless!
Per Viet Vet’s statements, we will need to destroy the Supreme Court building, Washington Monument, Library of Congress, and numerous other government buildings and memorials. They all include some religion and often Christian symbols and quotes. This memorial was build on the land while it was listed as public, then the land became U.S. government owned during the Clinton administration. Yes, it is a cross, but it appears that it was intended as a memorial to Vets
Karene,Read a little closer, I think you’ll see I didn’t refer to the Bible as crap. I was speaking of “Bible Thumping” or “Bible Thumpers”. Most people understand the term. I was raised a devout Christian and I still am. It’s alway dangerous to start talking about religion–the subject often brings out the worst in people, including me. But I was raised, as my mother said, “to do my praying in the closet.” What she meant by that was that I shouldn’t be proud or pushy about my faith and that I, as a Christian, didn’t need to cram my religion down my neighbor’s throat. I do not admire the extreme right-wing Christan movement in this country. I see the same intolerance on the extreme Christian right as we see in fundamentalist Muslims. Too many people on both sides see Iraq War is a holy war. My Baptist minister cousin believes identifies himself as a right-wing fundamentalist. He believes this war is all part of God’s plan and he just can’t wait for the Apocalypse, rapture, etc. He also has a lot more in common with George Bush and the other Republicans who started this war. He’s a chickenhawk. He dodged the draft and avoided service in Vietnam. I don’t mind so much if someone is anti-war, but I despise a coward. My cousin, like most of the people who started this Iraq deal started liking war about the same time he was too old to fight in one. Though I often disagree with Ms White Rose, I do admire her courage and service to the men and women serving in Iraq and I’m proud of every person who has been willing to put their butts on the line over their. I’m dead against this war. We’re grinding our military down to the nub and for no good reason, but I’m for the soldiers. As for the Bible. I think it’s a fine book and I read it daily. But we have to remember the Bible we have today is was edited by the Catholic Church, King James and only God knows who else. I think I can be a Christian and still not like Bible thumpers. It may be god breathed, Men not devine did the revisions.I didn’t like the website because it pretended to protect War Memorials and it was nearly all Ten Commandment deals. It was dishonest. I like to keep the Church out of the State. There’s too damned many countries in the Middle-East being run by religion for me to think it would be a good idea for this country. Rick, I don’t know where you’re from, but here in Kentucky we consider a cross to be a Christian symbol. When I die, I’ll have a simple soldier’s tombstone and there will be a cross on it, but I don’t want that graveyard to have a huge cross overlooking the whole cemetery because I served and will be buried with Christian, Jews, Muslims, and atheists and they they are just as important as I am. Karene, thank for your kind words about my service, but I’m no hero. The men in my company who’s names are on that wall in Washington are the heroes. And I didn’t fight for God. I fought for those boys who were there with me and I was scared too.
Folks we are going to have to stand up to the people of the ACLU. First of all the should be sent out of American because this is the land of the free and not from some so called organization to tell us what we can and cannot do. I for one will not abide by their ridiculous rules nor will I stop flying my flag. Ameicans are giving in to too many of these crazies. Write letters to our representatives. Believe me they want to be elected again. God Bless AmericaWhy not on every letter or package you mail write “Save the Veterans Cross in the Mojave Desert” across the bottom?
The ACLU is such a piece of crap. They are constanlty attacking memorials, among other things, and are slowly chipping away at everything that means anything to Americans.Since they don’t like anything in America then it is high time for them to pack up and leave. Those folks disgust me.
I have pride in my country and I don’t have to wrap myself up in the flag–I fought under that flag. I know what that flag means and what it stands for. You want the flag to have a big cross on it somewhere and I want religion as far away from my flag as possible. I get sick of the flag waver’s who go around deciding who’s patriotic and who’s not. Most of those jerks haven’t served and now they’re too old to get shot at, they’re all ready to go to war, with that damned cross leading the way–as long as they don’t do the bleeding. Nolan is right on the money. I’m glad there’s some people around who are willing to stick up for what that flag really stands for.
The only “real” memorials should be established as such. Would you feel the same way if Buddhist vets put up a giant Buddha in the middle of Yosemite? The ACLU is correct on this. Your irrational appeal to fear about not being able to fly your flag is simplistic and just plain reactionary. And you might not have pride in this country but I sure do. My country is inclusive and unlike the religious dominated states around the world. There are memorials to vets on every courthouse square I have ever been to. Entire parks are dedicated to vets. Holidays dedicated to vets. Hospitals reserved for vets. National Cemeteries for Vets. and on and on. Yet you say this nation does not honor them? But somehow this cross is going to undo all of the honors afforded vets. TOTAL AND COMPLETE BULL HOCKY.
People voluntarily sign the home owners agreement. It has nothing to do with city hall or the government or the ACLU. Those folks just do not want to obey what they agreed to in WRITING. They should get the other homeowners together and change the rules instead of being cry babies and wanting the government to interfere and then blaming the ACLU. This is just rampantly dumb!
The ACLU has challenged the constitutionality of someone trading their 5 acres for this one acre, the land the memorial sits on. They say the problem is a cross on federal land but a trade would make it private land. This proves the issue ISNT a cross on federal land because it would be private land. The ACLU just gets their jollies on attacking Christianity.
At least someone has admitted this about a Christian symbol instead of a war memorial. Thank you, Steve. I’m assuming the Iwo Jima Memorial and the Wall will be safe from those really scary ACLU types. What is it about Christian and Muslim fundementalists that they just have to cram their religion down everyone else’s throats. Christianity is doing just fine. It’s more popular all over the world than it ever was. What are you people so terrified of?
God Bless You for taking the time and effort to maintain another site dedicated to freedom and those who support it!
At least Viet Vet admitted the ACLU is only interested in attacking Christianity and NOT a cross on federal land. Thank you Viet Vet. How long before the ACLU demands the crosses be removed from Arlington National Cemetery?
I actually never said you were right. I think you are wrong and you are just using this as a sounding board to promote anti Semetic/Christian/Muslim beliefs. Try not to be so terrified of things you cant comprehend
Look, here’s my position on this. I am a young american who hasnt served, but will be soon. There are many good points made, there are MANY organizations dedicated to the Veterans, hospitals, parks, holidays, etc…However, (please note I am a practicing Roman Catholic) if I saw a Star of David in the place of the cross I wouldnt care. If I saw a 7-foot Buddha there, I wouldnt care. And as I said, I AM CATHOLIC. Like someone said, what if there was a giant Buddha in Yosemite? Well if it was built by a veteran who put his life on the line for our right to allow ACLU to do this, I say let him. He has EVERY right in my opinion. This country has so many problems with just accepting different religions. So f***ing what if its built on Federal land, the land WAS NOT federal when it was built therefore the Cross was there before the land was Federalized and so I believe it cannot be torn down, it was there first. I have no respect for ACLU. None. They can all die tomorrow and I will sleep like a baby that night. Just watch, in 20 years they will say the Vietnam memorial is unconstitutional. Here is my solution, take that SMALL 1 foot deep by ~5 foot wide speck of land that cross sits on and give it to the caretaker to pay taxes on. This not only disarms ACLU, but it keeps the cross there. You dont like looking at the cross when you drive by it, DONT LOOK AT THE THING!!! LOOK THE OTHER WAY!!! I also am appalled at taking the 10 commandments out of Government buildings. And taking “Under God” out of the pledge. Guess what, if you’re Muslim here is how the pledge MIGHT go for you. “I pledge allegiance, to the Flag, of the United States of America. And for the Republic, for which it stands. One nation UNDER ALLAH indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” And you can say nothing for the “Under God” part if you are atheist. What is the gain out of this? What is the prize? Does it make you feel better to split hairs on things like this? How seriously would it impact your life and impede your ability to live it if there was a small plaque in a government building that said the 10 Commandments. Take Christianity out of the equation, the 10 commandments are VERY good moral standards to live by. People in this country are stupid, I pity their stupidity. They just like to do things to do it. No real gain or reason. I say let it stand. And damn ACLU to hell for all I care, if someone who served this country to protect our right to protest things like this wants to put a giant crescent moon of Islam in front of a Washington DC McDonalds because he is Islamic, I would help him build it. Shame on all of you who cannot respect other religions. I am Catholic and I would fight for this if it was the Star of David, or a Crescent Moon or a Giant Buddha. I hope you will become more tolerant sometime soon, because I cannot believe the disgusting behavior of fellow Americans sometimes.
